FAQ & More Information about Flexible Family Supports Funds
Thank you for your interest in the Something Special program. Currently, as of 1/31/25, the program is on pause until further notice.
As an alternative resource, the Department of Child and Family Wellbeing has Flexible Family Supports Funding in which is comparable to the Something Special fund traditionally provided.
San Diego County’s website: Flexible Family Supports Funding is available to support children/youth in foster care with being able to participate in desired enrichment activities or to purchase items for personal development and enhanced well-being. Funding is provided on a limited-time basis to CFWB for distribution until June 30, 2025.
Please note that this funding is provided, coordinated, and supported by the County of San Diego and is an entirely separate government entity than Promises2Kids.

Is the Something Special fund connected to Flexible Family Funding?
- No, the Something Special fund is through Promises2Kids which is a privately funded non-profit. Flexible Family Funding is done through the Department of Child and Family Wellbeing through San Diego County.
Can I apply for Flexible Family Funds if my foster child has already used Something Special funding this year?
- Yes. The Something Special fund is an entirely separate program and Flexible Family funds are not part of the Something Special program.
What is the turnaround time for Flexible Family funds?
- According to their website, approval and fund distribution may take up to six weeks. Pre-approval of funds is required for any travel and any activities or items over $500. To inquire about a desired activity, to get pre-approval for a purchase, or to ask questions about this funding, please email CFWBFamilyFlexFunds.HHSA@sdcounty.ca.gov.
I had previously submitted a Something Special fund and the request was not fulfilled or I didn’t hear back, who can I speak to about this?
- Please email Anne@Promises2Kids.org about applications or inquiries submitted before 1/31/25.
What about other Promises2Kids programs like Camp Connect or Guardian Scholars?
- Camp Connect, Guardian Scholars, Foster Futures, Mentoring and other Promises2Kids programs remain active.
