Guardian Scholar parents, along with their significant others, kids gathered to learn and play at the YMCA for the first Guardian Scholars Parenting Group of the year!

The group’s goal is to create a safe space for former foster youth to learn about healthy parenting practices and how they can cultivate stable bonds with their children.

Thanks to the childcare provided by our amazing volunteers, parents were able to spend some time interacting with like-minded parents.

The group helps parents share their ideas, successes, and struggles with parenting. There was a short discussion on different parenting styles and bonding over common experiences.

Commenting on the community feeling of the group, one parent remarked that her daughter “has never played so much when in a crowd of people, not even when we are with family”.

Guardian Scholars recently held their very first meeting of the LGBTQIA+ group!

During this meeting, we honored Hispanic Heritage Month with a brief discussion on the experiences of Queer Latinx youth. We then opened the floor for youth to share ideas about what they would like to see in the future in order to feel their voice heard.

This new group is the latest expansion of our specialty groups and is open to all current and former foster youth who identify with, or are questioning their identity as LGBTQIA+. It is designed to provide an accepting, compassionate, and supportive community that cares about and supports the safety and success of young people.

We are excited for a great first year together and hope to see more people join!
