Meet Andres

25-year-old Andres, an aspiring advocate, father of two, and economics and political science student at Grossmont College who knows the power of a story.

His particular story begins when he entered care at age 5 with his brother. Unfortunately, they were separated and lived apart, Andres in 6 different homes. Gratefully, their caregivers enrolled them in Promises2Kids Camp Connect program where they could reunite for monthly events and an annual summer camp.

With the inconsistency of moving schools and homes often, Andres struggled academically. He left high school without a diploma and was incarcerated briefly. Becoming a father drove him to pursue a better life for himself and his family. He joined Guardian Scholars in 2024, where he’s earned his certification, is thriving at Grossmont, and hopes to transfer to California State University at San Marcos before joining the Marines.

He works full time at Family Health Center (PACE), is a member of the Youth board with San Diego Workforce Partnership, is a part of the Empowered Fathers, and hopes to work with youth at San Pasqual Academy, where he once lived.

Andres is one of 50 former foster youth taking part in Promises2Kids Foster Futures Initiative, designed to prevent homelessness and housing instability through financial support and intensive case management. He participates in several groups through Promises2Kids, including Advocates for Change, practicing advocacy through lived-experience; Men’s Leadership Network, where established career-minded mentors guide him through challenges; and the Latinx group, where he connects with other former foster youth of similar backgrounds.

Andres strives to be an example for youth in positions he was once in and continues to tell his story through his advocacy in the hope of lifting others up.
