Nordstrom’s Dress for Success Event Outfits Guardian Scholars to Chase Their Goals

We all know that first impressions matter and that dressing and looking your best can make all the difference in your personal and professional life. Thanks to Nordstrom Fashion Valley’s Dress for Success Event, students from Guardian Scholars specialty groups took big strides in that department over the weekend.

Students were paired with a Nordstrom stylist who curated outfits and offered crucial insight. For many, this was a first-time experience, and having the expertise of the stylists as well as the support of the coaches on hand made all the difference as they were fitted and dressed. Many delighted in showing off their new looks to each other and beamed as they saw themselves in the mirrors.

Guardian Scholars left with full shopping bags, feeling fresh and confident, ready to take on the next steps in their lives! A big thank you to Nordstrom and the stylist team for making this event unforgettable!

Thank you to the Downtown San Diego Lions Club for making this event possible!

Camp Connect Siblings Enjoy Wild West Fun at Knott’s Berry Farm

What do the Wild West, Snoopy, and Camp Connect have in common? Well, all were recently converged for a day of fun in the sun at @knottsberryfarm amusement park, of course!

A group of 32 siblings and 15 volunteers gathered at Promises2Kids offices before setting out. Youth immediately had a chance to pick out a new t-shirt and a goodie bag. These shirts were Peanuts themed and proudly showed off everyone’s favorite mascot, Snoopy getting up to his usual antics. This really put the group in the spirit for a big day out as they loaded onto the bus and made their way to the park.

This group was filled with thrill-seekers. Campers prioritized the most exciting and daring rides as they mapped out their day. Although the very youngest couldn’t ride every ride, they got their own thrill of laughter from watching their older sibling scream as they flew by on the roller coaster, screaming right back at them.

As the afternoon wore on, youth visited the gift shops where they were provided a gift card to pick something out for themselves. Some were feeling more sentimental and chose a plush souvenir to remember the day by, while others decided that a sweet treat would be the perfect way to cap off the day.

On the bus ride home, there was much laughter as they recalled and recounted their day with their siblings. Many also expressed their gratitude for this monthly opportunity. Your support makes these fun experiences for brothers and sisters possible, thank you!

Financial & Legal Professionals Gather to Watch the Padres and Learn How to Get Involved with Foster Youth

Promises2Kids hosted a financial and legal professionals networking event and Padres Watch Party presented by TGR Management Consultants.

Guests enjoyed the game, appetizers, and drinks while they learned about the ways to get involved in philanthropy and help San Diego’s foster youth. Promises2Kids Board of Directors members Danielle Humphries, Andrew Bolinger, and Brett Pernicano addressed those gathered and shared their experience getting involved in our mission. They spoke of their motivations as well as the impact we’ve been able to achieve together.

It was an inspiration to see so many community members attend, show their interest in being helpful, and take their first steps toward creating a brighter future for foster children!

Promises2Kids & SDCCE Gratefully Accept $1.4 Million Grant for Continuing Education for Foster Youth

In conjunction with San Diego College of Continuing Education (@sdcceedu), Promises2Kids celebrated a partnership in support of former foster youth students at a recent press conference and check presentation for a $1.4 million grant.

California State Senate President pro Tempore Toni Atkins (D-San Diego), who made this possible, was present, as was Promises2Kids CEO, Tonya Torosian, @sdccepresident Dr. Tina King,
Board President Maria Nieto Senour, Acting Chancellor Gregory Smith, and Gateway to College alumna Frida Martinez. All addressed those gathered to discuss the impact this funding will have.

The goal of the partnership between Promises2Kids and SDCCE is to continue building a seamless system of support for former foster youth following their educational goals. Youth transitioning out of care are in a unique position of vulnerability regarding support and mentorship. With partners like @sdcceedu and President pro Tempore @toni.atkins, we are determined to continue addressing this need and ensuring that every former foster youth is provided the opportunity they deserve.

Guardian Scholars Latinx Group Enjoy a Dinner Celebrating an Awesome Year of Community Together

The Latinx group celebrated the end of a fantastic year with a dinner attended by students, coaches, and staff at Cocina de Barrio.

The meal was Oaxacan, and the discussion focused on LGBTQ+ Pride month through a Latinx lens. They discussed the prominence of machismo and gender roles in Latinx culture, as well as the increase in acceptance of the LGBTQ+ community. There was also time for reflection and memories, and students shared their favorite classes of the year.

Guardian Scholar, Hector, is grateful for having a group that reflects his identity: “It’s so important to have community like this where people look like me. Thank you for holding this space for us.”

We are extremely appreciative for the work of the Latinx coaches this school year, who helped build an amazing and welcoming environment for our Guardian Scholars!
