Mentors & Mentees Celebrate National Mentoring Month at the Zoo

This month is set aside to celebrate the magic of mentoring and the life-changing relationships it creates. We invited Guardian Scholars and their mentors to the San Diego Zoo for a special mentor appreciation event over the weekend.

They teamed up for a scavenger hunt around the famous zoo, taking in the wildlife with each other and enjoyed a delicious lunch, mingling with other mentors and staff. Two Guardian Scholars Cristina and India spoke on the positive impact their mentors Gabby and Julie have on them and how over the years, their relationships have flourished into something truly special.

They shared how letting someone caring and supportive into their lives has allowed them to blossom into the people they want to be. Their mentors added that sometimes they feel they are getting the most out of it because witnessing these young people reach their potential is a special inspiration.

We were proud to welcome event sponsors, @mypointcu, so they could experience what their support enables. Thank you to MyPoint Credit Union for joining our mission!

Care Packages Go A Long Way

Meet Guardian Scholars Mareena and Valentina, who recently shared photos of themselves with care packages from Promises2Kids.

Every month, with the support of our volunteers, Promises2Kids puts together a wonderful care package for nearly 300 Guardian Scholars to enjoy. This is a unique way to remind youth that we are thinking of them and are here to support them.

Each package has a unique theme. This past month it was Winter BREAKfast, where they received breakfast items such as a mini waffle maker, batter for the waffles, tea, coffee, and much more!

Thank you to the many volunteers who dedicate their time to ensure youth receive these monthly goodies!

A Decadent Dinner Raises Funds for Critical Programs

Last week, an elegant 4-course meal paired with exclusive hand-selected wines, took place at Pamplemousse Grille in Solana Beach. Supporters, including founders Norma Hirsh and Renée Comeau, came together to enjoy this culinary experience and learn more about Promises2Kids’ mission.

We are grateful to all those in attendance. Together, over $21,000 was raised to support San Diego foster children.

Thank you to longtime supporter and Owner/Executive Chef, Jeffrey Strauss, and the amazing staff at Pamplemousse Grille for providing this delectable dining experience!

And a special thank you to Bill and Jami Voge, who donated the wine for the 3rd course.

Meet Mentor Bridgette!

To cap off National Mentoring Month let’s hear from one of our group mentors!

Mentors come from all walks of life, and each has their own unique experiences to offer. But one thing we consistently hear from them is how mutually enriching these relationships are for both sides.

Meet Bridgette (“B”), a group mentor in both the Black and LGBTQIA+ groups, spoke to us about what drew her to mentoring, what her experience has been thus far, and the positive impact mentoring can have.

Thank you to all our mentors for dedicating your time and talents!

Career Exposure at the Farmers Insurance Open PGA Tournament

A little rain couldn’t keep a group of Guardian Scholars off the links this week. They were treated to a buffet of exciting professional fields when visiting the annual @farmersinsopen PGA golf tournament at Torrey Pines Golf Course, for the Champions for Youth Career Tour.

@centuryclubsd is the philanthropic arm of the tournament and has been our supporter for years in our goals of providing opportunities and growth to foster children in San Diego through the Champions for Youth campaign.

A group of Guardian Scholars attended the tournament yesterday and were hosted for a tour where they took a first-hand look at careers in broadcasting, data and analytics, journalism, meteorology, event operations, hospitality, and more.

These Guardian Scholars will certainly take these insights with them as they plan the next phase of their lives.
